Individual healing session during the ceremonial night

The Work with Ayahuasca

At Feather Crown, ayahuasca ceremonies are conducted in a grounded, safe, and respectful way, guided by an experienced indigenous elder and supported by a trained team of facilitators.

The ceremony takes place in a spacious circular temple, designed specifically for this work. Before the ceremony, participants receive detailed preparation materials, and on the day itself, a group briefing is held to answer questions and ensure everyone feels ready.

In the evening, the ceremony begins with the serving of ayahuasca. Participation is always voluntary—healing can also unfold without drinking. Afterward, the space becomes quiet, and participants rest on comfortable mattresses, allowing the process to develop naturally.

As the effects deepen, the shaman works with traditional instruments and sacred songs (icaros), guiding the process and supporting each participant individually. Throughout the night, he performs energetic cleansings according to the tradition.

Each participant is also invited for a personal cleansing (limpia), where the shaman works directly with them using plants and traditional techniques to restore balance and clear heavy energies.

If you would like to understand the full process and preparation, you can read more about Ayahuasca ceremonies in Ecuador or our guide on how to prepare for an Ayahuasca ceremony.

Integration

The following morning, a guided integration session is held with translation, where participants can share their experience, ask questions, and begin to understand the process more clearly.

Private conversations with the shaman or facilitators are also available for those who need more personal support or clarification.

Integration is an essential part of the process. It helps bring the experience into everyday life in a grounded and meaningful way.

The Process

Each ceremony builds on the previous one. The first ceremony often focuses on cleansing—physical, emotional, and energetic—and may involve purging.

In the following ceremonies, participants usually enter the process with greater trust and openness. This allows for deeper work, clearer insight, and a more conscious connection with the experience.

This gradual process is an important part of traditional ayahuasca work, where each ceremony has its place and purpose.

Safety

Safety is a core priority in our ayahuasca retreat in Ecuador. A sober, experienced support team is present throughout each ceremony, assisting participants whenever needed.

Support is always available for moving around, using the bathroom, or navigating intense moments. The space is carefully prepared, both physically and energetically, and the team is trained to respond calmly and effectively in all situations.

For a deeper understanding of our approach, you can visit our Ayahuasca safety and screening process page.

Ayahuasca Brew

Our ayahuasca is prepared traditionally over fire, using only two plants: the ayahuasca vine Banisteriopsis caapi and the accompanying leaf Diplopterys cabrerana or Psychotria viridis (chakruna).

This traditional combination allows for deep, clear, and meaningful experiences. We work with selected varieties of the vine that come from established healing lineages.

No additional or inappropriate admixtures are used. The medicine is prepared with care, respect, and attention to quality.

Ceremony Leadership on Ayahuassca Retreat in Ecuador

don carlos landazuri shaman yachak from napo ecuador

Don Carlos Landazuri (kichwa tribe)

is a 78-years-old native Kichwa yachak (“the one who knows”) and a traditional healer from the province of Napo, Ecuadorian Amazon. Don Carlos started to receive teachings from his elders at a very young age, and he has been practicing his ancestral spirituality for decades to establish strong bonds with beneficial spirit doctors of nature, such as the spirits of plants, waterfalls, lagoons, mountains, stones, caves, and forests. His helpers are the spiritual forces of the jaguars, anacondas, and eagles. Don Carlos is sought by patients from different provinces of Ecuador. During his ceremony, he performs powerful individual cleansing rituals to all patients, using his leaf fan and singing, channeling healing powers of different healing spirits. In his visions, he makes each patient sit on a beautiful throne and receive all the beautiful energies of a particular spirit. According to Don Carlos, every patient is in need of different energies and he adjusts his healing so that the ritual is most beneficial. Don Carlos beams with strong energy and firmness during the ceremonial night, creating a strong veil of protection, and he is able to perform a special ritual of “sucking out negative energies” from the patient’s body. Don Carlos will be leading Ayahuasca ceremonies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ayahuasca ceremonies are included in the 5-day retreat?

The 5-day ayahuasca retreat in Ecuador includes two traditional ceremonies guided by an experienced indigenous healer. Each ceremony is supported by preparation, integration, and individual cleansing work.

Is it safe to participate in an ayahuasca retreat in Ecuador?

Safety is a core priority at Feather Crown. All participants go through a screening process, and ceremonies are guided by an experienced shaman with a sober support team present at all times. You can read more about our approach on the Ayahuasca safety and screening process page.

Is the 5-day ayahuasca retreat enough?

The 5-day retreat offers a meaningful introduction to ayahuasca work, especially for those with limited time or for those who prefer to begin more gradually. While the process is shorter, it can still provide valuable insight and emotional release.

What is the difference between the 5-day and 10-day retreat?

The main difference is the depth and pace of the experience. The 5-day retreat includes two ceremonies, while the 10-day retreat includes at least four ceremonies.

The 5-day format is more condensed, with less time between ceremonies. The 10-day retreat allows the process to unfold more gradually, with more space for integration and deeper work.

If you are traveling from far away or looking for a fuller experience, many participants choose the longer retreat. If you are unsure, you can request a call and we will help you decide.

Do I have to drink ayahuasca during the ceremony?

No, participation is always voluntary. Some participants choose not to drink or to drink a smaller amount. Each person is respected in their individual approach.

What kind of preparation is required before the retreat?

Participants receive detailed preparation guidelines before arrival, including dietary recommendations and lifestyle adjustments. You can read more in our guide on how to prepare for an Ayahuasca ceremony.

Is this retreat suitable for beginners?

Yes, the 5-day retreat is often chosen by first-time participants who prefer a shorter introduction. What matters most is a respectful and responsible approach.

Where is the retreat located?

The retreat takes place in the Ecuadorian Amazon, in the province of Pastaza, approximately 4 hours from Quito. The center is located in a quiet, natural environment away from urban areas. You can learn more on our retreat center page.

Is it safe to travel to Ecuador for an ayahuasca retreat?

From our direct experience, travel to our location in the Amazon region is safe and smooth when basic precautions are followed. For updates, see our current situation in Ecuador page.

Will there be translation during the retreat?

Yes, ceremonies and integration sessions are translated into English, ensuring clear communication with the indigenous healer and support team.

How many people participate in one retreat?

Group size is intentionally limited to maintain a safe and focused environment. Smaller groups allow for more individual attention and a more personal experience.

What happens after the retreat?

Integration begins during the retreat and continues afterward if needed. Participants can reach out for guidance to help process their experience and apply it in daily life.

How do I know if this retreat is right for me?

If you feel a genuine interest but are unsure, the best step is to request a call. We will help you assess whether the 5-day or 10-day retreat is the best fit for you.
